What to Expect at Your First Acupuncture Visit

June 9, 2026

A little uncertainty before your first visit is normal

Booking your first acupuncture appointment can bring up a mix of curiosity and nerves — especially if the only needles you've encountered are the ones at a doctor's office. At Sunrise Integrative Wellness in McLean, the aim is to make that first visit feel unhurried and easy to follow, so nothing about the process catches you off guard.

We talk first, before anything else happens

Your appointment opens with a conversation, not treatment. Xudong Wang, L.Ac., will ask about the concern that brought you in, and then widen the lens: how you're sleeping, how digestion feels, your energy through the day, stress levels, appetite, and daily routines. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, those threads help reveal the pattern underneath a symptom. You can also expect a look at your tongue and a check of the pulse on each wrist — both are long-standing ways of gathering information about how the body is functioning as a whole.

Will the needles actually hurt?

This is almost always the first question, and the honest answer surprises most people: acupuncture needles are extremely fine — much thinner than the ones used for injections or lab work — and the sensation is nothing like a shot. When a point is stimulated, you may notice a brief tingle, a dull heaviness, a spreading warmth, or a soft ache that fades quickly. That feeling has a name in Chinese medicine — de qi — and it's considered a sign the body is engaging with the treatment. It's common for people to settle in so deeply they nearly fall asleep.

What happens during the session

After the points are placed, you'll rest quietly for around twenty to thirty minutes in a calm room while the treatment does its work. Depending on what your body needs that day, your acupuncturist may weave in other approaches offered at the clinic — cupping, gua sha, moxibustion, electro-acupuncture, or a Chinese herbal formula to continue the work at home. Nothing is added without explaining it first.

How you might feel when you leave

Reactions vary from person to person. Many people describe a soft, floaty calm afterward; others walk out feeling clearer and more focused, and some simply feel ready for a nap. Any of those responses is a normal one. It's a good idea to keep the rest of your day gentle, drink plenty of water, and skip heavy workouts or long errands right after your session.

How many visits should you plan for?

Acupuncture tends to build on itself, so results usually deepen over a series of sessions rather than all at once. Something recent and specific may settle within a handful of visits, while long-standing or more layered concerns generally need a steadier course spread over several weeks. Once she has seen how your body responds to the first treatment, she'll walk you through a plan that fits your goals and adjust it as things change.

Simple ways to get ready

  • Have a small meal or snack first — arriving hungry isn't ideal.
  • Choose loose, comfortable clothes that can move up to the elbows and knees.
  • Drink water before your appointment and again afterward.
  • Give yourself a few extra minutes so the intake conversation doesn't feel rushed.

Ready when you are

Whether you're hoping for relief from pain, better sleep, steadier stress levels, digestive support, or just to feel more like yourself again, your first visit is really a chance to be heard and to map out a plan that fits you. You can book online here, call the clinic at (571) 658-7193, or ask Jasmine, the site's chat assistant, any questions you have before scheduling.
